Visa

At the time of writing this trip report (October 2025), Pakistan requires most nationalities to get a e-visa before traveling there. We applied for an e-visa on their official website and it took about 24 hours for an approval, with no costs (free!) for a 90-day single entry visa.

Tour

It is possible to travel around Pakistan independently, but travelers are sometimes required to register with the local police stations, which enables escort service for “security of travelers”. These can get complicated and incur longer wait times for approvals. Keeping these in mind, we decided to go with a tour around Pakistan.

Cash or card?

Pakistan uses Rupee (PKR) as its official currency, and the exchange rate at the time of writing was USD 1 = PKR 280. Exchanging USD is easy in Pakistan and can be done at banks or exchange centers which, equally, offer good exchange rates. You can withdraw cash from ATMs or official sources at airport or in cities.

Credit cards, such as Visa or MasterCard, works in hotels, well-established restaurants and some businesses, although preferred mode of payment is cash.

Tips

Here are some tips for a trip to Pakistan:

• Temperatures – We visited in early October and the temperatures were mild and bearable. Ranging from 22C (71F) to 32C (89F), it was mostly sunny, but humid all over the region we traveled to.
• Mosquito repellent – Although we didn’t have any issues with mosquitoes, it’s necessary to carry repellent considering the dengue fever and malaria cases in the region.
• Toiletries in hotels – expect a soap, shampoo and towel in all hotels.
• Bathrooms – Hotels have commode in toilets, but outside of hotels most toilets are sit-down style with no toilet paper. We recommend carrying toilet paper with you while you’re on the road.
• Cash – carrying USD / EUR to convert to PKR is the best way to go!
• Photos – People are very friendly and would be okay to take their pictures, but please take their permission before making that click! Most places, including the big cities are good for taking pictures but maintain caution while clicking women. Considering the Islamic laws, it’s not advisable to take pictures of women.
• Water – bottled water is available everywhere and is cheap! It costs about PKR 100 for a large 1 liter bottle.

Accommodation was booked as a part of the tour in Pakistan.
Note: Costs not mentioned because they were included in the tour cost. All rooms with private bedroom with air-conditioning and ensuite bathroom. Breakfast included.
