Day 5 – Ashgabat
After breakfast at the hotel, we headed out to Turkmenbashi airport for the 1-hour flight on Turkmenistan Airlines to Ashgabat. The views of the airplane gives you an idea of how much of a desert Turkmenistan is made of (80% of the country)!

After reaching Ashgabat at 1pm, we headed to National Museum of Turkmenistan (the Carpet museum was closed!). Some of the displays in the seven galleries of the museum include famous carpets, artifacts from ‘Ancient World’ (archaeological excavations in Altyn-Depe), trophies given to the dictatorial Presidential family over the years, paintings, musical instruments, sculptures, etc. English-speaking guides are included in the entrance fees.
The massive compound of the museum building also has the tallest flagpole in Turkmenistan standing at 133m (436ft).

After the National Museum, we had lunch at a Yurt restaurant serving delicious Turkmen food.

Post lunch was a tour of the capital city and all its ‘weird’ structures! Ashgabat is known for its white marble buildings, and by law all vehicles must be white, light grey or silver in color only. No other color of vehicles are allowed in the city. Your vehicle must be clean and washed at all times or pay hefty fines!

We retired to our hotel after a full day of sightseeing, and started packing for a late night flight out of Turkmenistan.

Day 4 – Yangykala Canyon, Turkmenbashi

Yangykala Canyon
With about 80% of the country as a desert, Turkmenistan has quite a few natural attractions to offer. And out in the far west lies a natural attraction that few Turkmen have ever even seen: the Yangykala Canyon, a windblown landscape of colorful canyons and strange formations that stretches some 15 miles across the desert to the Garabogazköl Basin.
Once underwater, the floor of an ancient ocean that existed millions of years ago makes up Yangykala. When the ocean dried up, it left behind a rocky landscape that was slowly eroded by wind and rain, cutting out cliffs and canyons whose walls are now ribbed like the carcasses of strange stranded sea creatures. And then there are the colors: pinks and oranges, reds and yellows, a spectrum of coral shades that give Yangykala Canyon a distinct look.
Also referred to as the “The Grand Canyon of Central Asia,” Yangykala had no Colorado River to carve its path, so the actual canyon is far less defined than the Grand Canyon.
Located about 170kms from Turkmenbashi, it takes just over 2 hours to reach. The roads are in poor condition, so you need to go by 4×4. Once you arrive, you’re taken to a rock formation known as the “Crocodile’s Mouth” from which you have excellent views of the canyon.
For some spectacular views, come by the canyon during sunset, and camp out on the plateau above the canyon. Be prepared, however, as it can be extremely windy and very cold at night!

Lunch was served by the tour company at the canyon. We started our return drive around 2pm reaching Turkmenbashi at 4pm.
Turkmenbashi
The port city of Turkmenbashi doesn’t have many sights to offer, and is used mainly as a landing spot for commercial and trading ships, or by locals to access the luxury resorts of Avaza.
We visited some of the few sights:
Turmenbashi Railway Station – one of the oldest train station in former Soviet Union, trains run to and from Ashgabat.
Heroes monument – Monument representing the heroes of WWII from Soviet era.
Gates of Central Asia – The original ‘walls’ known to be the gates along the silk road.

After a nap in the evening, we headed to Tolkun Restaurant for dinner and later stopped by the bar in our hotel for drinks and karaoke.

Day 3 – Darvaza to Ashgabat to Turkmenbashi
After breakfast this early morning at the yurt near Darvaza gas crater, we headed back to Ashgabat reaching around noon, taking in 5 hours of driving.

We stopped by the Ashgabat Restaurant for lunch and tried local cuisine – pumpkin and spinach manty along with meat manty.

We headed out for some sightseeing in Ashgabat – first stop was Pushkin monument in a park erected in the memory of the Russian poet and novelist. A short walk from here is the Lenin Monument that was opened in 1927 in honor of the 10th anniversary of the October Revolution. Lenin’s statue stands on a pedestal in the form of a cube is decorated with majolica tiles, the pattern of which repeats the gels of Turkmen carpets of all the main five tribes of the Turkmen people.

From here we visited a government building displaying spectacular Soviet-era concrete mural by legendary sculptor Ernst Neizvestny. In 1962, Neizvestny’s work was heavily criticized as “degenerate” by Soviet President Khrushchev, who publicly insulted numerous architects, sculptors, and composers.

Next stop from here was Ashgabat Market. Prime market for produce, meat and ice-cream. Although filming is not prohibited, the locals are very wary about filming here so make sure to get permission from your tour guide and from the people before filming/photographing.
We stopped by the British Pub in central Ashgabat for chai before heading to the airport to catch our flight to Turkmenbashi (KRW) on Turkmenistan Airlines reaching at 8pm.

Day 2 – Ashgabat to Darvaza
After breakfast at hotel, we visited a bookstore to purchase postcards, and then the post office to get a stamp in the Postal Stamps Travelogue book and send postcards.

Around 11am, we drove for 5 hours to Darvaza, with a stop for lunch at a local village. The owners of the house demonstrated the preparation of Pishme – a fried dough-cake usually served during weddings. And Ishlekli – lamb meat stew covered in flat bread and cooked for 7 hours.

After lunch it was just a long drive through the desert leading to the Darvaza Gas Crater, a man-made crater that is burning with natural gas fires for last 52 years. The site was drilled by Soviet engineers in 1971 as an oil field but collapsed within days, forming the crater, with the engineers choosing to flare the crater to prevent emission of poisonous gases but underestimating the volume of the gas! Although the government has expressed interest in extinguishing the crater, it is one of the main tourist attraction in the country drawing in thousands of visitors.

We strolled around the gas crater in day and after sunset though late hours. And accommodation was at a yurt near the crater. The tour company provided dinner and breakfast (next morning).

Day 1 – Ashgabat, Nokhur, Kow Ata
After arriving at 2am, it took about an hour to get a visa stamped and exit the airport. We were picked up by our driver at airport and dropped-off at Yyldyz Hotel.
After checking-in the hotel and some rest for a few hours, we drove for 2 hours towards Nokhur village.

Akhal-Teke Horse Farm
The first stop is the Akhal-Teke Horse farm – The Akhal Teke horse breed is well-known for speed and endurance, intelligence, and a distinctive metallic sheen. The shiny coat of the breed led to their nickname, “Golden Horses”.

Köw Ata Underground Lake
A quick drive from the horse farm brought us to Köw Ata Underground Lake – A long metal staircase leads down into the Bakharden Cave, where the 235-foot-long lake is located. The warm waters contain a high amount of different salts and minerals, most notably sulfur, which is responsible for the distinct smell within the cave.

Nokhur Village
A short drive after, we reached our last destination of the day – Nokhur Village. Known to be one of the most picturesque villages in Turkmenistan, Nokhur (or Nohur) village is known for a huge centuries-old plane tree with the hollow of which several people can fit. The Nokhur cemetery has nearly every grave marked by wooden post adorned with the horns of a mountain goat. The goat horns are thought to fight off evil spirits and help the souls of the deceased to ensure a safe passage to heaven.

Gyz Bibi
On the outskirts of the village, above a hilltop is a place where desires come true – Gyz Bibi, one of nine sisters slipped through a narrow crack in the rock where, according to legends, the locals consider one of the gates to paradise. Even today, women consider this place to be a good-luck charm and they leave their hairpins in the small crack as a symbol of good luck and protection, especially during pregnancy.

We drove back to Ashgabat late afternoon and headed to Berk Cafe for dinner and drinks. This is known to be ‘the cafe’ where all the expats and travelers go!

Considered to be the North Korea of Central Asia for its autocratic and authoritarian government ran by one family, Turkmenistan is bordered by Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Iran and Afghanistan. It’s a totalitarian theme park and the least visited countries in Central Asia because of the strict entry rules. I visited Turkmenistan in 2023 for five days along with another traveler.

Planning
Visa
The only way to travel to Turkmenistan as a tourist is going on tour with a licensed operator. There are quite a few out there, but we booked a tour with Travel Notoria (website: www.travelnotoria.com). The costs for the tour depends on the number of days, people, and activities you select.
They will arrange for a ‘letter of invitation’ (LOI) from the Turkmen government which will allow you to board the plane, and enter the country. Upon arrival, you will get a visa stamped in your passport by showing the LOI.
We got a driver and a guide throughout our trip. I would highly recommend Travel Notoria as your tour company for their amazing communication, arrangements and competitive tour price.
Flights
Very few airlines fly to Turkmenistan, and I had booked my flight from Istanbul (IST) to Ashgabat (ASB) on Turkish Airlines (TK 320) arriving at 2:10am.
Cash or card?
Although all the expenses are mostly covered by the tour company, you can ask for cash from them. Do NOT withdraw cash from ATMs or official sources at airport. The official exchange rate is 1 USD = 3.50 TMM. But the unofficial rate at the time of writing was 18 TMM. So make sure to get local currency from your tour operator.
Your credit cards (Visa or MasterCard) may work in big hotels, but almost every business do not accept cards. Additionally, paying by credit card will incur official exchange rate – for example, a coffee costs TMM 30 which officially is $8.60, but at the unofficial rate it’s $1.60.
