Day 3 – Ahu Tongariki, Rano Raraku, Other Places
On the third day in Easter Island, we hired a local guide to travel with us to the sights of Easter Island that mandates a tour guide to visit.
While it’s possible to explore parts of Easter Island independently, hiring a knowledgeable local guide adds a completely different dimension to the experience. Many Rapa Nui residents are licensed tour guides, offering invaluable insights into the island’s history, archaeology, culture, and traditions that you simply won’t get from reading information boards. We explored the island with Iti Kaltenegger (Contact: Instagram and WhatsApp), and it was one of the best decisions we made during our trip. Her deep knowledge of Easter Island, engaging storytelling, and passion for Rapa Nui culture brought every archaeological site to life.

Ahu Tongariki
Waking up early and heading out at 5:30am was one of the easiest decisions we made because we knew we were heading to Ahu Tongariki, the island’s largest and most iconic moai platform. As we arrived in the darkness, the silhouettes of the fifteen towering moai stood silently against the horizon, creating an atmosphere that was both peaceful and unforgettable. As the first light of day began to appear, the sky gradually transformed into shades of orange, pink, and purple, and watching the sun rise directly behind the ancient statues was nothing short of magical. It was one of those travel moments where everything fell perfectly into place, and we found ourselves simply standing in silence, taking in the incredible beauty of Rapa Nui.
The site is not only the largest ceremonial platform on the island but also one of its most significant archaeological landmarks, with all fifteen restored moai standing proudly in a single row overlooking the Pacific Ocean. As the daylight grew stronger, we could truly appreciate the scale and craftsmanship of these remarkable stone figures while learning about their fascinating history.
Tips: Temperatures can be surprisingly chilly before dawn, even during the warmer months. We recommend bringing a warm jacket or layers, plenty of water, and, if you have space, a foldable chair so you can comfortably enjoy the sunrise. A thermos of hot coffee or tea is also a great idea while you wait for the first light to illuminate the moai at Ahu Tongariki.
Important National Park Tip: If you’re planning to visit both Ahu Tongariki and Rano Raraku, timing matters. Both sites can only be entered once using your Rapa Nui National Park ticket when accompanied by a guide. However, there is one exception: if your first visit to Ahu Tongariki is for sunrise, you’ll still be allowed to return later during daylight hours as part of a guided visit. The reverse is not permitted — if you visit Ahu Tongariki during the day first, you won’t be able to re-enter for sunrise. For the best experience, we highly recommend scheduling your first visit to Ahu Tongariki at sunrise before returning later to appreciate the site in full daylight.
Missed the sunrise entry? (and breakfast): If you’ve already visited Ahu Tongariki during the day and aren’t permitted to re-enter for sunrise, don’t worry — you can still enjoy the spectacle from outside the national park boundary. Simply park in the designated area outside the entrance (shown by the green square on the map) and watch the sunrise from there. While you’ll be much farther away from the fifteen moai than visitors inside the site, the view is still impressive, especially as the first rays of sunlight illuminate the statues. Bringing a camera with a telephoto lens or a pair of binoculars will help you appreciate the details from a distance and still experience one of the most iconic sunrises on Easter Island.

Rano Ranaku
Often referred to as the “birthplace of the moai,” this extinct volcanic crater is where nearly all of the island’s famous stone statues were carved from volcanic tuff before being transported to ceremonial platforms across Rapa Nui. As we walked along the trails, it felt as though we had stepped into an open-air museum. Everywhere we looked, partially carved moai emerged from the hillside, some standing upright, others lying unfinished where ancient craftsmen left them centuries ago. It was incredible to see firsthand how these monumental statues were created and to imagine the immense effort required to carve and move them across the island.
The scenery at Rano Raraku is just as remarkable as its history. The green slopes of the volcanic crater are dotted with nearly 400 moai in various stages of completion, creating one of the most unique archaeological landscapes in the world. Walking through the site at a relaxed pace gave us plenty of opportunities to admire the craftsmanship of the ancient Rapa Nui people while soaking in the breathtaking scenery that surrounds this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
While sites like Ahu Tongariki showcase the finished moai standing proudly in formation, Rano Raraku tells the story of where it all began.

El Gigante, Rano Ranaku {Image credits]One of the most impressive sights at Rano Raraku is El Gigante, the largest moai ever carved on Easter Island.
Measuring approximately 21 meters (69 feet) in length and estimated to weigh around 270 tons, this enormous unfinished statue remains attached to the volcanic bedrock where Rapa Nui artisans abandoned it centuries ago.
Although it was never completed or transported to its intended destination, seeing the sheer scale of the statue offered us a fascinating glimpse into the engineering achievements of the Rapa Nui civilization and became one of the most memorable highlights of our visit to Rano Raraku.
Hanga Te’e Vai Hu
One of the lesser-known but worthwhile stops near Rano Raraku is Hanga Te’e Vai Hu, a quiet archaeological site that offers a different perspective on Easter Island’s rich history. Unlike the fully restored platforms found elsewhere on Rapa Nui, the moai at Hanga Te’e Vai Hu remain exactly as they were discovered after toppling centuries ago. Scattered across the ground in front of their ahu, the fallen statues provide a powerful reminder of the island’s turbulent past and allow visitors to see these remarkable monuments in their original post-collapse state.
Beyond the moai, the reconstructed hare paenga, the traditional boat-shaped houses once served as homes for the Rapa Nui people. Built with stone foundations and originally covered with thatch, these elongated huts had remarkably low entrances that helped protect their occupants from the island’s strong coastal winds. Walking among these reconstructed dwellings made it much easier to imagine what daily life would have been like centuries ago. Nearby, there are also restored stone features, including cooking areas, earth ovens (umu pae), and other remnants of an ancient village that reveal how families lived, prepared food, and gathered together in this coastal settlement.
With the Pacific Ocean stretching out behind the ancient stone platform and the rugged coastline surrounding us, Hanga Te’e Vai Hu had a peaceful atmosphere that encouraged us to slow down and appreciate the island’s history.

Ahu Akivi
A visit to Ahu Akivi was one of the most unique stops because it is the only ceremonial platform where the seven restored moai face directly toward the Pacific Ocean. According to Rapa Nui tradition, these statues represent the seven explorers sent by King Hotu Matu’a to discover the island before the first settlers arrived.
What makes Ahu Akivi even more fascinating is its remarkable astronomical alignment. The seven moai are positioned so that they face the setting sun during the spring equinox and the rising sun during the autumn equinox, demonstrating the impressive knowledge of astronomy possessed by the ancient Rapa Nui people. Unlike many of the island’s ceremonial platforms that overlook the coastline, Ahu Akivi sits several kilometers inland, making it a unique and intriguing stop that highlights a different chapter of Easter Island’s history and culture.

Cueva De Las Dos Ventanas
One of the more unusual places on Easter Island was Cueva de las Dos Ventanas (Cave of the Two Windows), a lava tube cave that offers both fascinating geology and spectacular coastal views. Formed by ancient volcanic activity, the cave gets its name from two natural openings in the rock that frame the Pacific Ocean like giant windows.
As we stepped inside and looked out through these openings, the contrast between the dark volcanic rock and the brilliant blue ocean created one of the most striking photo opportunities on Rapa Nui.
Exploring the cave was a fun change of pace from visiting the island’s many moai sites. A 30 minute walk from the parking lot through the uneven lava rock, rugged interior, and constant sound of waves crashing against the cliffs gave the cave an adventurous feel. Looking through the two “windows,” we could watch the powerful surf below while appreciating just how dramatic Easter Island’s volcanic coastline really is. Depending on the time of day, the sunlight filtering into the cave creates beautiful patterns and makes the surrounding landscape even more photogenic.

After visiting most of the sights in Easter Island, we headed back to Hanga Roa, dropped off our guide and walked to Moorea Resturant for ceviche dinner.
This was our last full day in Easter Island and the next morning after breakfast, we headed to the airport and said goodbye to this beautiful island.

Day 2 – Orongo, Rano Kau, Anakena Beach, Ahu Nau Nau
On day 2 after breakfast at the hotel, we picked up the rental car from Insular Rental and headed to visit some of the free sights (no permit required) of the island.

First stop was a drive of about 10 minutes to the south-western part of the island – Orongo, a ceremonial village perched dramatically on the rim of the Rano Kau crater. The drive there was already spectacular, but nothing prepared us for the view that greeted us when we stepped out of the car. On one side, the massive volcanic crater stretched before us, filled with a freshwater lake surrounded by lush vegetation. On the other, the endless Pacific Ocean crashed against steep cliffs, with the small offshore islets of Motu Nui, Motu Iti, and Motu Kao Kao completing one of the most breathtaking panoramas on Rapa Nui.
Walking through Orongo felt like stepping back in time. The carefully restored stone houses, with their low entrances and curved roofs, offered a glimpse into the island’s fascinating past. Unlike many of the archaeological sites on Easter Island that focus on the iconic moai, Orongo tells the story of the Birdman Cult, a unique chapter in Rapa Nui history that emerged after the era of the great stone statues.

Anakena Beach and Ahu Tau Tau
From here, we drove for about 45 mins to the northern-most tip of the island arriving at Anakena Beach. It felt like discovering a hidden tropical paradise. Nestled along the island’s northern coast, Anakena is unlike anywhere else on Rapa Nui. The soft white coral sand, swaying palm trees, and crystal-clear turquoise water created a picture-perfect setting that almost made us forget we were on one of the world’s most remote islands. It was the ideal place to slow down, relax, and appreciate a completely different side of Easter Island.
What makes Anakena Beach even more special is that it isn’t just beautiful—it’s also one of the most historically significant places on the island. According to Rapa Nui tradition, this is where the first Polynesian settlers, led by King Hotu Matu’a, are believed to have arrived centuries ago. Standing just steps from the beach is Ahu Nau Nau, one of the best-preserved ceremonial platforms on Easter Island. Seeing the magnificent moai overlooking the ocean while listening to the gentle sound of the waves was one of those moments that made us pause and simply take it all in. The contrast between the ancient stone statues and the vibrant blue Pacific Ocean is every bit as breathtaking as the photos suggest.
We spent the afternoon doing very little—and that was exactly what made it so memorable. The calm, shallow water made for a refreshing swim, while the soft sand invited us to simply sit back and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. We also grabbed a quick bite from one of the nearby food stalls, enjoying fresh empanadas and piña coladas while taking in the incredible view of the moai standing watch over the beach.
It’s rare to find a beach where you can swim in warm, clear water while gazing at centuries-old moai that have witnessed generations of Rapa Nui history.

Kari Kari Ballet
Driving back to Hanga Roa later in the afternoon, we headed back to our hotel for a quick shower, and walked to the Ballet theater to watch one of the most exciting shows in the world.
Watching the Kari Kari Cultural Ballet is one of the best things to do on Easter Island and an experience that shouldn’t be missed during your visit to Rapa Nui. More than just a dance performance, Kari Kari offers an immersive introduction to the island’s unique Polynesian culture through traditional music, storytelling, and energetic choreography. Founded in 1996, it is the oldest and most celebrated cultural ballet on the island, with talented local performers dedicated to preserving the customs and traditions of the Rapa Nui people.
The show features an impressive mix of ancient dances, rhythmic drumming, chanting, and colorful costumes that bring centuries-old traditions to life. Throughout the evening, you’ll witness performances such as the powerful Hoko warrior dance, the graceful Sau-Sau, and the intricate Kai-Kai string art, each telling stories of love, history, nature, and ancestral beliefs. The performers’ energy is infectious, while the live musicians create an atmosphere that transports the audience into the heart of Rapa Nui culture.
Held at the Ma’aranui Theatre, the performance often begins before the curtain rises, giving visitors the opportunity to meet the dancers, learn about traditional body painting, and take photos with the performers. The entire experience lasts around an hour and a half and is suitable for visitors of all ages. Since seating is limited and performances are popular throughout the year, it’s a good idea to book your tickets in advance.

The show is held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings. General admission includes a welcome drink, while the dinner package includes a traditional meal and two drinks before the performance.
We chose the most expensive ticket (dinner + show) and got to seat in the front row – for this ticket, your seats at the performance and dinner are labeled with your names and pre-set. For other tickets, it’s open seating on first-come-first-serve basis.
After the show, the dinner is a four-course meal included in the cost of the ticket, which also costs CLP 45,000.

Our adventure on Easter Island (Rapa Nui) began with LATAM flight LA841, which landed at Mataveri International Airport at 11:55 a.m. Immigration and customs were quick and efficient, and before long, our hotel concierge was waiting to greet us. From the airport, it was just a 15-minute drive to Cabañas Hostal Tojika, our home for the next few days. After a smooth check-in and dropping off our luggage, we wasted no time heading out on foot to explore Hanga Roa, the island’s only town and the perfect starting point for discovering the fascinating culture and history of Rapa Nui.
Our first stop was Ahu Riata, a small but historically significant archaeological site conveniently located next to our hotel. From there, we followed the scenic coastal path north toward Caleta Hanga Roa, the island’s picturesque fishing harbor. We spent some time peering into the crystal-clear water from the pier, hoping to spot the sea turtles that are frequently seen swimming in the bay—a simple but memorable experience that made for a relaxing introduction to Easter Island.
As avid travelers, we couldn’t miss a visit to the post office to collect the distinctive Easter Island stamps in our WorldMarked book, a tradition we’ve enjoyed throughout our travels.
We then continued to the Holy Cross Church (Iglesia de la Santa Cruz), one of Hanga Roa’s most unique landmarks. The church beautifully combines traditional Catholic architecture with intricate Rapa Nui carvings and Polynesian artistic elements, reflecting the island’s rich cultural heritage.
The afternoon was spent browsing the colorful stalls at Mercado Artesanal and Feria Artesanal Hare Umanga, two of the best places in Hanga Roa to shop for authentic local handicrafts, wood carvings, jewelry, and souvenirs crafted by Rapa Nui artisans. Before heading back, we took a leisurely stroll through Hanga Vare Vare, the island’s cultural center where many of Easter Island’s festivals, music performances, and traditional dance events take place.
Sunset (5:30 PM – 7:30 PM)
As the afternoon drew to a close, we made our way to Ahu Tahai, arriving more than an hour before sunset to secure a good viewing spot. Widely regarded as the best place to watch the sunset on Easter Island, this beautifully restored ceremonial complex is home to several impressive moai statues overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The golden hour light slowly transformed the landscape, casting warm hues across the ancient stone platforms and creating one of the most breathtaking scenes we experienced on Rapa Nui.
With plenty of time before the sun dipped below the horizon, we wandered through the nearby Hanga Roa Cemetery, one of the island’s most distinctive cultural landmarks. Unlike traditional cemeteries elsewhere, many of the graves feature crosses decorated with Polynesian motifs and Rapa Nui-inspired carvings, reflecting the unique blend of Catholic and indigenous traditions that defines Easter Island’s culture.
From the cemetery, we continued north along the scenic coastline to Ahu Hanga Kioe, enjoying uninterrupted ocean views and the dramatic volcanic shoreline. The peaceful coastal walk provided a different perspective of Hanga Roa before we returned to Ahu Tahai just in time for sunset. Watching the moai silhouetted against a sky filled with vibrant shades of orange, pink, and purple was an unforgettable experience and an easy highlight of our Easter Island itinerary.

The cozy atmosphere provided the perfect setting to unwind after a full day of exploring the island. We ordered the creamy risotto, which was rich, flavorful, and beautifully prepared with fresh local ingredients. Every bite was comforting and satisfying, making it one of the standout meals of our trip.
After enjoying a leisurely dinner and soaking in the warm ambiance, we returned to our hotel to rest and recharge for another day of adventure on Easter Island.
It was the perfect way to end our first day on Rapa Nui, offering a wonderful glimpse into the island’s vibrant community and setting the stage for the incredible adventures still to come.

Easter Island Visa paper issued at Santiago airportAlthough Easter Island is one of the world’s most remote inhabited islands, it is a special territory of Chile. As a result, the same visa requirements that apply to Chile also apply to Easter Island. Travelers whose nationality requires a Chilean visa should ensure they obtain one well in advance of their trip.
In addition to Chile’s standard entry requirements, all passengers traveling from mainland Chile to Easter Island must complete a special immigration process before departure. Travelers may be asked to present the following documents:
Confirmed accommodation reservation (printed or digital copy)
Boarding pass
After completing the immigration check, travelers receive an entry authorization document for Easter Island. Keep this document accessible, as it will be collected by airline staff at the boarding gate before departure.
Flights to/from Easter Island
LATAM Airlines have two (almost) daily flights between Easter Island and mainland Chile (Santiago).

The international airport of Easter Island (IPC) is located in the southern end of the island, and is about 15-20 mins walk from the center. Although most hotels offer pickup services for free or a charge, you can get a “taxi” (not official taxi, but locals offering taxi-services) from the airport to the hotel.
Hiring or Renting Car in Easter Island
Several local companies offer a wide range of rental vehicles, including cars, jeeps, motorcycles, mountain bikes, vans, minibuses, and ATVs. Rental rates vary depending on the vehicle type and season, and visitors should expect prices to be relatively high compared to mainland destinations.
Do You Need a 4×4 Vehicle? – Whether a 4×4 is necessary depends largely on your planned itinerary. Since the entire island falls within a national park reserve, off-road driving is prohibited. Most popular attractions and points of interest accessible to independent travelers can be reached via paved roads, making a standard vehicle sufficient for many visitors. While a 4×4 can provide additional flexibility and comfort, it is not essential for exploring the island’s main attractions.
For our visit, we rented an automatic Suzuki Jimny from Insular Rental for two days. The rental cost was approximately CLP 190,000 (about $212) per day, including full insurance coverage.

SIM Card in Easter Island
You cannot buy a SIM card on Easter Island, so your best option is to purchase one in Santiago or at Santiago airport. Overall cellular network on the island is good, except for some spots where you get weak signal.
Most restaurants and hotels have wifi, and there’s a public wifi available in Hanga Roa town square with limited speeds and access.
Cash or card?
The official currency of Easter Island is Chilean Peso (CLP), with an exchange rate of USD 1 = CLP 915 (at the time of visit). Most hotels, restaurants and supermarkets accept Visa and MasterCard for payments.
There are a few reliable currency exchange centers in Hanga Roa town, and at the airport.

Missed the sunrise entry? (and breakfast): If you’ve already visited Ahu Tongariki during the day and aren’t permitted to re-enter for sunrise, don’t worry — you can still enjoy the spectacle from outside the national park boundary. Simply park in the designated area outside the entrance (shown by the green square on the map) and watch the sunrise from there. While you’ll be much farther away from the fifteen moai than visitors inside the site, the view is still impressive, especially as the first rays of sunlight illuminate the statues. Bringing a camera with a telephoto lens or a pair of binoculars will help you appreciate the details from a distance and still experience one of the most iconic sunrises on Easter Island.
