Day 3 – Konjic, Mostar | Five Days in Bosnia & Herzegovina
We started early morning from Sarajevo for a 2.5 hour drive to Mostar, with a quick stop at Konjic.

About 61 kms south of Sarajevo, Konjic is well-known for it’s rafting on the Neretva river, and for Tito’s bunker, a huge underground complex where the leadership of Yugoslav republic planned its atomic war command. Now it is a remnant of the cold war.

Mostar
Another 70kms south from Konjic is Mostar. Formerly the most ethnically diverse cities in Bosnia, and today suffering geographical division of ethnic groups, Mostar was the most heavily bombed of any Bosnian city during the war following the breakup of Yugoslavia.
Mostar is most famous for this beautiful historic Ottoman-style bridge, which spanned the Neretva river. Through combined efforts with the international community, rebuilding of The Old Bridge was completed in 2004, almost 11 years after its destruction, using some of its original pieces recovered from the Neretva river. A significant portion of the city has been rebuilt and visitors might be surprised to see that this formerly war-torn city is a lively and beautiful destination once again, particularly the area within and around the old town. However, many visible signs of Mostar’s troubled recent history remain.
Want to avoid crowds in Mostar?
With access to Dubrovnik in Croatia, hoards of cruise ship and other tourists arrive in Mostar almost every day, and the tiny town can get really busy.
To avoid the crowds, walk around the town early in the morning (especially during summer days when the sun is up early).

Day 1 – Sarajevo | Five Days in Bosnia & Herzegovina
It was late evening (day before) when we arrived at Sarajevo airport. Although taxi from the airport has a fixed price of BAM 25, we chose to take the public bus that costs BAM 5 (see details below) and takes about 25-30 mins from the airport to the city center.

Centrotrans Eurolines airport buses are running every hour during the day, and less often at night. Most of the departures of buses are aligned with the arriving flights at Sarajevo airport. The bus travel time from Sarajevo airport to Sarajevo city center is around 30 minutes. Just leave the arrivals area of the airport, and walk straight across beyond the parking lot to the bus stop (look for yellow sign saying “Bus” marked on the road itself; or ask anyone).
One way fare costs BAM 5 ($2.50) for a single ticket and BAM 8 ($4) for a return ticket. You must buy the tickets on the bus with cash in their local currency. There are exchange offices in the airport and ATMs available.

The buses are running every 5-10 minutes from the district of Dobrinja going to Austrijski Trg (Austria Square) in Sarajevo city center. To reach to the bus stop in Dobrinja you will have to walk 10 minutes from the terminal to this location (43.829740025382094, 18.340802650996494) from where you can catch the bus.
The bus travel time is around 30 minutes and the bus fare is BAM 1.80 payable in cash and local currency only.

The buses are running every 5-10 minutes from Austrijski Trg (Austria Square) in Sarajevo city center to the district of Dobrinja. To reach to the airport, you will have to get down at the bus stop in Dobrinja (ask the bus driver where to get down) and walk 10 minutes from the terminal to this location.
The bus travel time is around 30 minutes and the bus fare is BAM 1.80 payable in cash and local currency only.
Our hotel was a 5 minute walk from the Latin Bridge bus stop, so after a quick check-in, we walked around the old town, grabbed dinner and called it a night. This is what we call ‘Day 0’.
First day in Sarajevo started with breakfast at Fabrika Coffee cafe, which opens at 7am, unlike most places across Europe. You can easily walk around the old town Sarajevo for most of the sights to see. There’s a free walking tour every day at 10:30am and 3pm, but we decided to go solo and visit all the sights on our own.

[In January of 1993 under the codename “Objekt BD,” the tunnel was built to link the Bosnian neighborhoods of Butmir and Dobrinja under a Serbian-controlled aircraft runway.]
[The crude tunnel was dug by hand and shovel from both sides, by workers who chiseled away at the earth in eight-hour shifts. The clandestine laborers, who were paid in cigarettes, had to contend with near constant shelling and underground water which would rise to waist high in the cramped tunnel and had to be emptied one bucket at a time.]
[Once completed the tunnel had an average height of one and half meters, and was shored up with tons of steel and concrete. A small railway was finally built into the floor and crucial food, gas, and weapons were finally able to be secreted into the very heart of the siege.]

Day 5 – Mostar to Sarajevo | Five Days in Bosnia & Herzegovina
This was the last day of the trip and we had a 2.5 hour drive for 130km from Mostar to Sarajevo. After breakfast at a cafe in Mostar, we headed out along the E73 highway which is a one-lane highway and taking up 2/3rd of the road.
But before heading to our hotel in Sarajevo, we took a detour up north of Sarajevo to see the Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun.

About an hours drive north of Sarajevo is the town of Visoko where archaeologists claim to have discovered the relics of a civilization dating back 34,000 years – the Bosnian Pyramids.
Visoko is a small town that features various locations linked to the Bosnian Pyramids theory. There’s an ancient burial ground (there’s nothing to see though, it’s still buried), a visitor center with its tunnels, and the pyramids themselves. After walking around Visoko a while and grabbing lunch, we headed to the Pyramid of the Sun.
The largest of the Visoko hills (called the ‘Valley of the Pyramids’) is known as the ‘Pyramid of the Sun’. It is an unusually square-looking hill. Four sides are clearly distinguishable, though the rear of the rise, away from the town, is somewhat less defined. You can walk up to the hill, past the souvenir shops, to reach a final slope ascending from the rear up to the pyramid’s apex. The road stopped beside a pyramid-themed cafe, and we took the rest on foot.
It started to rain heavily on our drive back to Sarajevo, so after check-in to the hotel (right next to the airport), we relaxed a bit. Later in the evening, we returned the rental car at the airport, walked back to the hotel, had dinner and called it a day.
Our flight out of Bosnia was early morning next day.

Day 4 – Blagaj, Počitelj, Međugorje, Kravica waterfalls, Koćuša Waterfalls | Five Days in Bosnia & Herzegovina
The southern area of this country is Herzegovina, with Mostar as its provincial capital, but there are some spectacular villages and sights to experience in Herzegovina. Today we started early from Mostar to visit some of them on a day trip.

Blagaj
About 13km from Mostar is Blagaj, well-known for the Dervish House – Blagaj Tekija, which is a Dervish monastery that’s nearly 600 years old. Situated at the base of a cliff, next to the source of the river Buna, it’s a unique and picturesque series of buildings that looks even better in person than it does in pictures.
The Tekija (or Tekke) was first founded during the height of the Ottoman empire. Time and rock slides have led to extensive repairs and reconstruction to the buildings. Today, thanks largely to a Turkish travel agency, the Tekke looks mostly as it did in the past. You can visit the monastery inside (entrance fee is BAM 10) and view the rooms of where and how the dervish would practice.

Žitomislići Monastery
Next stop, a few kilometers away from Blagaj is Žitomislići Monastery – a Serbian Orthodox monastery dedicated to the Annunciation of the Most Holy Mother of God. You can visit inside only by appointments, and we could not get any appointments for that day.
Driving further south on the same road brings us to the grey-washed but beautiful tiny village of Počitelj. With total inhabitants of less than 900, this has become a major tourist attraction because of its perched-up-the-hill houses and sweeping views over the rocky mountains and deep river valley. The fort of Počitelj was built between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries and the best view of this village are from up here. This village is also considered for a UNESCO World Heritage site.
You can park your car outside the walls, on the highway or at the Han restaurant inside the walls. From here it’s a 10-15 min easy hike up to the fort, which is open 24/7. The views of Hadži Alija mosque and Sahat-Kula (Clock Tower) from the hike up are stunning. You can also climb the steep circular staircase of the Fort tower for spectacular aerial view of the whole area!
Pro-tip: Visit this village as early in the morning as possible, because past 9am the hoards of tourist buses stop here and the place gets really busy!
Međugorje
About 22km driving north from here is the small town of Međugorje – well-known for its Church of Saint James and Statue of Risen Christ.
Ever since 1981, when six teenagers reported that they had seen an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, in the hills between here and the village of Bijakovići, this sleepy Herzegovinian town has become the second-largest Catholic pilgrimage site in the world. There has been much controversy over the legitimacy of the visions, but in May 2019 the Vatican finally recognized it as an official pilgrimage site.

Risen Christ Saviour is a sculpture by Slovenian artist Andrej Ajdic which has been placed for Easter 1998 at south of church in front of path that brings to local cemetery.
Sculpture has been called Risen Christ but real intention of artist was to alloy together “Cross” with “Rising Christ”. Looking at Risen Christ, it shows that he is not on crucifix but he is traced, he rises and stands up with body footprint left on the ground.
For some time, leaks appeared from the right knee of this sculpture continuously liquid, which were similar to tears and did not evaporate or froze. From a scientific perspective, the liquid that come from statue is water 99 percent, and contains traces of calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, sodium, sulphur and zinc. About half of the structure is empty inside and as bronze shows micro cracks and the drops of tears are because of air exchanges.

Kravica Waterfalls
A quick 19km drive from Međugorje is one of the most visited place in Herzegovina – Kraviva waterfalls. This natural park has been called mini Iguazu, with emphasis in “mini”. The large tufa cascade on the Trebižat River has a height of about 25 meters and the radius of the lake in the base of the waterfall of 120 meters.
Incredibly popular with locals, tourists from Croatia and travelers road tripping the Balkans, it’s a visual treat to see these waterfalls, but the tourists and commercialization has added restaurants and bars, beach chairs for tanning, and a boat ride in this mini-lake! Expect a hoard of crowd, even early morning!
Koćuša Waterfalls
Last stop for the day was a 18km drive from Kravica waterfalls to this mini-version called Koćuša Waterfalls. It’s located next to a nice restaurant and is more quiet compared to Kravica. Would we go there if we were to do again? Probably not worth the drive!
After a full day of driving around Herzegovina experiencing some of the best towns, villages and waterfalls, we headed back to Mostar for some rest, before heading out for dinner and calling it a day!

Day 2 – Travnik, Jajce | Five Days in Bosnia & Herzegovina
Having a rental car in Bosnia always helps reaching the small towns at your own pace. After breakfast at Fabrika Coffee (because they open early!), I headed out to the airport to pick up the rental car. And from the airport I started driving up north along the beautiful roads of Bosnia.

First stop of the day was the town of Travnik, about 92 km north from Sarajevo. Travni’s old city dates back to the early 15th century with many buildings originating from the Ottoman period such as mosques, oriental houses, clock towers, and street fountains. Travnik is the only town in Bosnia and Herzegovina to have two clock towers and fountains.

Parking in Travnik: There’s a parking lot next to Plava Voda that costs BAM 2 for 1 hour, paid to the attendant. The castle is a 10-minute walk from here.
This small town has two main sights to visit: Plava Voda which is a large spring, initiating 350 meters long the eponymous river. The spring rises under the Vlašić mountain, just below Travnik Castle, in the center of the Old Town of Travnik.

Jajce
About 65km from Travnik lies this small town well-known for its German-speaking residents, and the only town in Bosnia where a waterfall flows in the center of the town.
Some of the sights of Jajce are:
Jajce Waterfall – This 17meter (55 feet) high waterfall is stunning and the highlight of this town. Located in the center and outside the walls of the fortified old town, Jajce waterfalls are accessible by paying BAM 8 as entrance fees and walking along a path leading to a platform right under the falls.

Jajce old town – A medieval fortified nucleus of Jajce, with Jajce Citadel high above town on top of pyramidal-shaped steep hill, is enclosed with approximately 1300 meters (4300 ft) long defensive walls. It is one of the best preserved fortified capitals of the Bosnian Kingdom, the last stronghold before the kingdom dissolved under the pressure of military advancement at the onset of Ottoman Empire takeover.

Jajce Catacombs – The catacombs of Jajce represent an underground church. They were built by order of the founder of the city of Jajce, Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić in the late 19th and early 20th century.
They are believed to be the work of Jajce stonemasons who built the entire underground complex in living stone or supported themselves with already existing caves. The catacombs in Jajce seem to be a very important Christian temple. Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić himself wanted to transform them into a family tomb. The catacombs have gone through many epochs and different times and cultures. During the Ottoman Empire, legends say that at that time a dervish was imprisoned in the catacombs for 40 days, considering the place sacred, so people declared him an awliya after leaving them. So they served for spiritual purification.
In the Austro-Hungarian period, due to the favorable temperature, traders used them for storing goods. During the Second World War, before the AVNOJ session, the entire Supreme Headquarters stayed on the plateau of the catacombs, and due to the unstable situation and frequent bombing, they hid in the catacombs themselves. The catacombs of Jajce have been declared a historical monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Jajce watermills – About 6km from the old town of Jajce are these little windowless huts sit on top of skinny stilts right over the gushing water. Since the flow here is spread out, by using a series of little mills instead of one big water wheel, the diffuse water power could be aggregated. Most of the huts go back to the period of the Austro-Hungarian empire (about 1867 to 1918), and they give the impression of a little storybook village.
No longer used for actual milling, the Pliva Lakes watermills draw tourists down the river from the giant waterfall in town. That one is certainly impressive with its showy 65-foot drop. But the little shingled watermills feel like they might be home to some local trolls, with their dragons hitched up out back.
We headed back to old town Jajce for some coffee, before driving for 3 hours back to Sarajevo.
And after reaching Sarajevo in late afternoon, we strolled around the center, had dinner at Simice cafe – pizza and coke!
Parking in Sarajevo – It’s not easy to find free parking in the town center. Our hotel recommended a parking area (location: 43.86073992018476, 18.430803686987083) that charge BAM 20 for 24 hours (in and out is okay). So we paid for two days without worrying to find a spot!

This itinerary takes you through some of the best places around mid and south Bosnia & Herzegovina for five days, but if you have a few days more then include some of the other wonders of the country as well, especially other towns like Višegrad, Trebinje and Banja Luka.
Visa
Make sure to check if you need a visa to travel to Bosnia & Herzegovina. We did not require to get a visa prior to our trip, so it was a breeze going through the immigration at Sarajevo airport.
Tips
Here are some tips that I experienced on my trip to Bosnia & Herzegovina:
Cash or cards – Credit cards are not widely used in Bosnia & Herzegovina but ATMs and currency exchange centers are located almost everywhere in the big cities. Most restaurants, cafes, tourist sites will expect cash, and the option to use credit cards might not be available.
Transportation – Taxis are not expensive and Uber is not available. Public buses run across the country and driving is also great in Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Driving in Bosnia & Herzegovina
With a great network of highways and paved roads in the country, driving in Bosnia & Herzegovina is a breeze. Other than the main A1 highway, all other highways are two lanes (single lane on each side) with a speed limit of 80 kmph max. The main highway A1 is a toll-highway so depending on your entry and exit points your toll amount will differ. The speed limit on main A1 highway is 130 kmph.
Passing (overtaking) is common on highways with clear markings of go and no-go zones. The traffic across the main A1 highway was pretty empty, but the other highways (especially Sarajevo-Mostar connection) is heavy with cars, with a few trucks passing through.
Water – Tap water is safe to drink. One liter bottle of water from a local market will cost BAM 3 (approx $1.55).
Wi-fi – Available in most hotels and cafes in cities.
SIM Card in Bosnia & Herzegovina
Company: The tourist SIM card from BH Telecom is available all across the country (at least on our trip). You do not need to show any ID to get a SIM card; just walk to the store, pay the money and get the SIM card.
Cost: There are two types of cards: BAM 20 for 15GB, and BAM 40 for 30GB; including 100 local calls.
Where to get: You can get BH Telecom SIM card at any market store or any place across Bosnia. You can also get at the BH Telecom kiosk at Sarajevo airport. Upon exiting the secure area, turn right (at the arrivals hall) and you will find the ‘shop’ on your right side.
Activation: The SIM card is activated as soon as you put it in your phone.
The SIM card comes locked and the PIN number is mentioned on the package, but is usually 0000.
We were told by the staff at the airport kiosk that Android users do not need to add any extra APN settings (please make sure to confirm with the staff person at the store), but for iOS users you need to add these APN settings:
1. Select Settings > Cellular.
2. For iOS devices with eSIM and physical SIM, Select your Cellular plan (usually Primary is the eSIM you’re already using, and Secondary will be the physical BH SIM. But if you’re replacing your existing SIM with the BH SIM, then you can skip this step).
3. Select Cellular Data Network.
4. Set your APN settings to: Cellular Data > APN: active.bhmobile.ba (Leave the username and password blank).

Want to avoid crowds in Mostar?
Centrotrans Eurolines airport buses are running every hour during the day, and less often at night. Most of the departures of buses are aligned with the arriving flights at Sarajevo airport. The bus travel time from Sarajevo airport to Sarajevo city center is around 30 minutes. Just leave the arrivals area of the airport, and walk straight across beyond the parking lot to the bus stop (look for yellow sign saying “Bus” marked on the road itself; or ask anyone).
