myTaxi – iOS app review
Bang for buck: It’s free!
Ease of use:
myTaxi is a Hamburg-based company that helps booking taxis across 30 cities in Germany, and Vienna, Zurich, Barcelona and Sydney. And now by using their app, you can pay your taxi ride. Thanks to the help of Paypal and Wirecard, myTaxi Payment is a direct billing process between driver and passenger, smartphone to smartphone.
You don’t need to remember their credit card number, pay with cash, use near-field communication (NFC), scan Quick Response (QR) codes, or buy hardware. One in five German taxis are associated with myTaxi, but not all of the myTaxis are set up to use the new payment system to start.
The website and app (we didn’t see this. See the cons section below) shows real-time taxis around your address, which helps to know how far it may take for the next taxi to arrive.
Here’s how it works:
Download the free app, register to create an account. You also enter your Paypal or credit card (Visa or Mastercard) through the app or myTaxi website.
Next you book the cab (usual booking process of start & end address, etc.) but activate myTaxi payment in the app, that way only myTaxi Payment drivers can accept the order.
Once you’re in the cab, the driver starts the billing process by typing in the fare. Push notification pops up on your screen with the fare. You can chooses the tip percentage and the paying method.
Just slide that icon on the screen to pay and confirm the whole process with your personal identification number. Driver receives push that billing was successful. You receive a receipt via email right after the billing process.
For the passenger there will be no extra charge to use the myTaxi Payment service. MyTaxi requires a referral fee (typically 21 cents per trip) from participating taxi drivers.
The app is not entirely functional. These are the downsides or errors we experienced at the time of writing this review:
- After you login with your email address, it kept giving a message “Login unsuccessful” and after about 10 tries, the success message showed up; followed by another message saying “You have been logged out”!
- Adding a new address (in Hamburg) and selecting it, still brought us back to our current location (in Los Angeles).
- Some sections are still in the “coming soon” mode.
- Saving credit card information was impossible because it kept giving errors like “Credit card not found”. Not sure why!
Send your comments if you have used this app for your travels. We’d love to hear from you!
