Starting May 15, 2015, every international tourist must obtain a visa prior to visiting Egypt, as announced by Egypt’s ministry of foreign affairs.

Currently, citizens of a lot of countries got their tourist visas on arrival at an airport, but after May 15, everyone must obtain visas before entering Egypt. Although rules for tour groups remain the same – visa on arrival.

This visa policy was instituted in September 2011, but Egypt suspended it a few days after Egyptian citizens protested it would hurt the nation’s tourism economy. Hoping to generate $20 billion a year by 2020 by attracting 20 million visitors, Egypt definitely has taken a step back in attracting travelers.

Make sure to check the website of Egypt’s consulate in your home country or in the country you’re at, or call them to confirm the requirements before planning your trip to the land of pyramids.
