Looking for last minute hotel booking? Try these travel apps (updated)
Disruptions on your travels can leave you with cancelled hotel bookings leaving you to need a place to stay at the last-minute. There’s a recent boom in same-day, last-minute booking apps for smartphones and tablets that helps you to find a deal when travel providers won’t cover an overnight stay. Hotels are racing to fill up their remaining rooms and will woo travelers with mobile-only flash sales, typically discounting rates 10% to 40% from other online sites.
Most of the aggregator websites like Priceline, Expedia, Travlocity, Hotels.com etc. offer ‘last-minute deals’ on hotels. And then there are smartphone apps that offer the same. Not all websites or apps offer deals in all regions of the world, and a few of them target specific regions only.
So here’s a list of some of them:
Serving Berlin and other destinations in Germany mainly, JustBook concentrates on the European market with properties in Switzerland, Spain, U.K., Austria and some capital cities across Europe like Amsterdam, Brussels, Budapest, Dublin and Prague.
Another website offering last minute hotel bookings across Europe only, BlinkBooking is a mobile-only app. This means that they don’t have any desktop website for searching deals. Download their app that offers more than 1,000 hotels across 97 cities in seven countries, with the deepest coverage in Spain, France and Italy.
Available for iOS only, VeryLastRoom is available for European last-minute hotel deals covering 21 cities in France. The user-interface is not great and with no rate guarantee, it offers about 100 two- and three-star hotels nationwide on any given day.
Spain-based Hot Hotels offers a handful of hotels for last-minute booking in 18 countries in Europe, such as Spain and Russia, plus Argentina, with inventory posted throughout the day. While it lacks a rate guarantee and a stylish user interface, the app has hundreds of hotels available for 48 destinations in its country of origin Spain.
HotelTonight lists about 600, mostly upscale, properties across more than 50 destinations in the US, Canada, UK and a couple of other European cities, such as Amsterdam and Dublin. It is the most popular of the same-day booking apps, with rooms available from noon, local time, daily. With one of the best user-interface in last-minute booking apps, HotelTonight shows an average rating from other users of the app making it helpful to select hotels. There’s no rate guarantee so you will have to take its word for the prices to be truly deals, which isn’t always true.
This is the best app for destinations in Mexico. Available for iOS only, LastRoom offers last-minute deals on hundreds of hotels across all the destinations of Mexico.
The best choice out there if you’re simply looking for a cheap place to rest your head in the broadest number of places in the world, with a concentration in Europe, North America and Southeast Asia. Available for iOS only, the app provides last-minute deals on tens of thousands of properties, including hostels — with listings in the most number of languages (18). The app sells rooms around the clock, unlike other apps that are not in operation for parts of the day. Unlike rival HotelTonight, Booking.com Tonight has a rate guarantee. If you find the same room cheaper elsewhere, the company will pay you the difference.
CheckInTonight is available for last-minute deals in a very few places of South-East Asia only – Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, with new locations being added regularly.
Another app for European destinations and mainly Spain. Available for both iOS and Android, this app is updated thrice a day and the daily booking can be made up to 3am (European time) across 400 hotels around Europe.
Concentrating on a few Asian countries, HotelQuickly is making its mark in Thailand (Bangkok, Hua Hin, Koh Samui, Pattaya, Phuket), Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia( Jakarta, Bali, Lombok), Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi), and Taiwan.
